Insurance Coverage When Working Out of State

|

Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have had a devastating effect on many communities throughout the southeastern United States.

At Allied Insurance Managers, we are sending our sincere condolences to all those personally affected and anyone with loved ones, colleagues or friends affected by the recent crisis. We are also sending our hope for a quick recovery.

At Allied Insurance Managers, we assist with insurance for many contractors in Michigan. However, it is important to note that each state has different insurance regulations and requirements. We appreciate your efforts and want to make sure you stay protected wherever your business takes you.

What do you do about insurance coverage when you suddenly need to perform work in another state?

The first thing you need to do is contact your insurance agent or insurance carrier to understand the insurance requirements of the state you will be working in. Do NOT attempt to work out of state before doing this.

Insurance is managed by each state and therefore the coverage required varies by state. This is especially important when it comes to workers’ compensation for out of state employees. Your current insurance policy may need slight adjustments for coverage and pricing before you are able to work.

Your insurance carrier will need to know every detail of the work you are planning to do within another state so that you can be given the proper coverage. Your out of state work may have additional exposures that your carrier will need to be aware of so it can be properly addressed.

For example, if you are planning to perform out of state work in Florida, Florida’s laws require you to contact your insurance carrier. If you do not have an insurance carrier, you will have to get a workers’ compensation policy with a carrier in Florida.

At Allied Insurance Managers, we know how important it is for you to have the proper insurance coverage no matter where you are working. If you are planning on working out of state, be sure to contact us as soon as possible so we can assist you.
